The trend that you see a lot on the catwalk
now a days: the socks that lift up until the the upper legs. With off course
the adidas slippers ‘adilette’. So what do I think of this new trend?
I remember when I was younger and we moved from a small village to the city of Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Even in this village I saw this trend, but only by the ‘street’ people, in Rotterdam asswell back then. People who were from the Antillies or Surinam, or just from South-America. My parents are from Surinam and they immigrated to the Netherlands. But to come back to my point, I saw the boys wearing the slippers with socks lifted way to high, standing there with there scooters or bike’s smoking and chilling enjoying the outside. And it is really weird for me to see that picture in a whole new environment: fashion week on the catwalk! It kind of takes the story away of how I know it. That is how they dressed, and for some people it always was really trashy. But in some way I could appreciate it, because that is how they are and how they like to dress, that is how they feel good. I mean in South-America these people life outside, enjoying each other, the weather. But off course it was never really appreciated here. A lack of understanding I guess. It always had this image and now it’s changing big time. Maybe it will bring up more understanding between different kind of cultures or people, maybe it will bring more respect if people understand the story behind fashion instead of just liking it.

But that is not how the story of the Adilette started. It started far before I was even born. 40 years ago, the german footbal team asked for a shoe that
they could wear in the changing rooms and showers. The devolopers had only one
thing in mind: health and safety. I think it was never expected that it would be
such a trend now a days and that it would keep on coming back, in a lot of
variation too: purple, red, yellow, with wings and so on.
My favorite combination with the Adilette is
the 90’s look (top-left corner). Why? It gives me a little bit of the feeling that I had back then but....... now it is complete! It has class, charisma and a lot of style and to put this in combination
with the Adilette. It is like street wear has been lifted to a higher level. The classy street wear. The quote: "never forget where you came from", has been on my mind the whole time. Can I just say: I LOVE IT!!!!
To me THAT is style, just to have your own.
So trashy or classy? Actually it is not important to me anymore, it is just what it is.
I WANT THE SLIPPERS!!!!!
